I, Homunculus

inside, out

Welcome, Freshman

I am sitting in Columbus Metro Heliport waiting – as I shall be for some time – for Southwest to whisk me back to the City of Big Shoulders after my drop-in on the denizens of the theatre department at Ohio Wesleyan University. I’m a little too tired to be an accurate judge of the value of what I said – I do know (as usual) I rambled on a bit longer than I intended. I came to a sudden realization that the things that fascinate me about Chicago theatre are, perhaps, a little esoteric. Also, that a group of college kids on couches can be a very intimidating audience.

But once again the blog comes to my rescue: I was able to work in a plug at the end for I, Homunculus, in the hopes that I might salvage my billing as a person who had some information to impart.

So, for you folks who have just joined us, here are some posts from the past 18 months that chart some of the things I babbled about today:

Training:

Here’s an early series of posts on the scenework I was doing in Steve Scott’s class at Act One Studios. (I highly, highly recommend it, by the way).

Improv:
Here’s a pretty raw (but nontheless true) post about the IO audition process I went through, with some general thoughts on improv in Chicago. (Incidentally, this was several months after my team was cut at IO and during the time I was taking Susan Messing’s class at The Annoyance.)

Improv, or the Needs of the Many

Productions:

Our Country’s Good
I talked a bit about that group of Northwestern grads I worked with. I neglected to mention that the whole process was pretty instructive as a case study of your first few years in Chicago: second-guessing one’s audition, a surprising turn of events, body image issues, and (for good measure) proof that hard work can pay off.
