A Good Pair of Shoes

Posted on | September 24, 2009 | 1 Comment

My New KicksI just got a new pair of shoes, and I’m realizing that a good pair of shoes may be the most important tool a freelance actor/web programmer/arts manager & marketer can have.

I admit, my old shoes had more than run their course. I have a tendency to make do long past the point where it makes any sense. They had huge holes in the soles and the canvas – and the heels had been worn down to nothing. My perennial problems with my knees and sciatic nerve have been flaring up more frequently.

So I finally invested in some new kicks, and apparently not a moment too soon. In only their first hours on my feet, these shoes have spirited me to the convenience store just in tile to grab Red Bull and Doritos before they closed – which fueled a marathon programming session which ended up lasting to 6am. And they gently carried me to the 9am meeting the next day to discuss that project and others in the hopper for Marshall Creative.

They pounded the last bit of pavement that separated me from my long-hoped-for goal of agency representation when I went to officially register with Big Mouth Talent.

They’ve shuttled me between a riverside cafe in the West Loop – where side project Artistic Director Adam Webster in I have been squeezing in planning and strategy meetings during his lunch breaks – and up to a coffeehouse in Lincoln Square, to meet with our fantastic graphic designer Marni Keenan to talk over the latest revision of the company’s soon-to-launch-and-boy-will-it-be-awesome website.

They fired me up the stairs this morning at the Department of Cultural Affairs offices downtown as I went to work researching for the Theater section of the Chicago Artists Resource, and they’ll scoot me out the door of the DCA’s Storefront Theater tonight as we start the final performances of Under Milk Wood.

They kept me from getting stabbed as I picked up a sword for the first time, learning the steps of the duel in New Leaf’s The Man Who Was Thursday, and you can even catch their film debut in the forthcoming trailer.

I said to someone this week, “You know, this week is crazy – just let me getĀ  through it and it’ll be much calmer.”

I caught myself and said, “You know what, that’s a lie. It’s always this crazy.” Because it usually is.

I think it’s important to recognize when you tend to run your life in a particular way. Maybe you then figure out how to slow down, take a break, or even change direction entirely. Or you figure out what you need to not getĀ tripped up, keep going, and move faster.

Buy me a beer?
