A Response to Mr. Jones

Chris Jones, in his review this week of the Broadway revival of All My Sons calls for co-star Katie Holmes to display “a little more Toledo” and invest a little more of “her modest origins” into her performance.
Though I don’t envy anyone trying to convey nuanced emotions to a 1,000 seat house, I’m reasonably sure she hasn’t been on stage since she was Lola in Damned Yankees at St. John’s Jesuit more than 10 years ago. (I remember it being a bit of a scandal since she hadn’t gotten any substantial parts at her own school, Notre Dame, where she milled about in the chorus for a few years and suffered the indignity of being my first dance partner before being whisked off to Dawson’s Creek shortly after graduation.)
However, I do want to be clear about one thing, as anyone from T-town will tell you: Katie’s family is from the suburb of Sylvania (median family income: $73,947). I, on the other hand, am from Toledo (median family income: $41,175). I have also been on the stage a few times since 1997. So, Mr. Jones, if you really want to see what the Glass City has to offer (and there aren’t, you know, any M*A*S*H reruns on), I suggest coming down to see New Leaf’s production of Touch, opening January 7.

Pssst. Trust was your last show, silly. You’re doing Touch with New Leaf.
These five-letter T-words are becoming your thing, huh?

Retconned – jeez, as many jokes as I’ve made about 5 letter T-words, you’d think I’d get it right. True story – I made a short film in between with the title Toast. It wasn’t until later that I realized the pattern.
