There is No "I" in "Dell"

So, you know the ads for the new Dell laptops you keep seeing on every CTA bus? The one’s they want you to buy so you can express yourself through color? Turns out, as with the Borg, such individuality does not compute with Dell.

Seems they could handle a few hundred orders, but the system broke down when incoming college freshman – you know, the young, hip types they are specifically targeting with this makeover – actually started, you know, ordering them.

I mention this because I dropped a fair chunk of change on one of these laptops over a month ago. Dell’s standard turnaround is two weeks to ship date, yet I am still lap-topless. What’s worse, I didn’t know what had happened until I called Dell, as the “check your order” section of my Dell account has been displaying the message “The system is undergoing routine maintenance. Please check back in a few minutes” for the last four weeks. Passive aggressive, anyone?

My new ship date is Tuesday, and they helpfully upgraded me to one-day shipping “as compensation.” We’ll see what happens.

[EDIT 8-28: I just checked - again, on my own initiative - and found my order has been delayed another week. I was required to consent to the delay, as well (thanks to an FTC order) or my order would have been automatically canceled. Was anyone going to contact me about this?]

Buy me a beer?

Oohh, I’m looking into buying a laptop soon. And to girl it up more, I want a personalized colored one. I’d love to know more about what you got and if it’s worth it to go through Dell.
