No Business in Show Business

Even as Chicago wonders where it’s going to put all the Wicked wannabes, here’s a cautionary tale from NYC. It illustrates the strange relationship between business, commerical theatre, and non-profit theatre. The bottom line is – small, non-profit theatres usually have a backoffice staff of 1 1/2 people, while even a small, two person show will have at least 7 or 8 people working on it, and that’s if they build the set themselves. Far more people spend far more time in the theatre and in rehearsal than manning phones and computers. That studd’s done when ordinary people are sleeping. So while I’m sure the builders are grumbling about how much money they’re losing and the City Planning Commission is trumpting a great compromise, the theatres are left with slightly bigger scraps.
